Alexa Lawrence is the Founder of Apples to Peru, a start up providing support and funding in order to bring technology to Peruvian school kids. Born and raised in the US with Spanish being her first language, Alexa lives in Carlsbad California fromwhere she also runs Apples from Peru Initiative.
“My Mom was born in Peru so I have a Peruvian background. Growing up with the culture has giving me great respect for the people and I want to give back to the country by providing modern day technology to the schools and libraries so they can further their education.”
The Apples to Peru Project Links
Alexa tells us that the idea for Apples to Peru started as a result of her husbands work. He worked in a Apple store and would come home with stories of how customers were always trying to get rid of their old apple products and didn’t know what to do with them.
That’s when the idea sparked and and enabled them to combine their love for education, recycling, and Peru.
The main focus of the business is to provide a technology recycling alternative, and provide the recycled apple technology to communities in Peru. Apples for Peru is passionate about helping others further their education in a country that is lacking modern technology.
The Challenge of Being a Non-Profit Start Up
Being a startup is one hurdle to overcome, but it is even more difficult to become a non-profit start up.
“There are many fees and paperwork regarding taxes exemption, licensing and registration”, says Alexa.
“We are hoping that our kickstarter campaign will help us raise the funds to finance those fees and licensing. With the remaining funds we will focus on marketing and building our non-profit.”
Sharing the startup with friends and family has generated the most business so far. Social media and word of mouth have been the main vehicle for generating followers and support.
Apples for Peru offers a wonderful alternative for recycling technology, while providing children, schools, and libraries with technology in Peru. They stand out becuase they are providing two solutions at the same time.
Their kickstarter campaign has 17 days to go. “We need all the love and support we can get”, Alexa says.
