For those that don’t know yet, the NBN is the new broadband network that is currently being built in Australia. It is a government initiative to improve connectivity and internet speeds across the country.
For most businesses, the main benefit of the National Broadband Network is internet speed. However, it is what a business can do with this speed that brings additional benefits.
Before the NBN was available, some businesses in Australia were not even able to connect to ADSL. This would mainly be in very rural areas of the country, but also in some city areas where ADSL exchanges were full businesses could not connect to a fixed internet service.
The NBN is being built to stop these problems and ensure that any business in Australia can connect to a faster internet. Key benefits of the NBN for business include:
Connecting to the world.
Having access to a fast internet means that any business can reach out and gain customers from anywhere in the world. This may include exporting speciality goods or advertising tourism in Australia. Remote business can start taking tourist bookings from places they’d never been able to before.
Improved connectivity. As the world becomes more and more data focused it’s important to have a fast internet connection. This goes for download and uploading speeds, and the NBN provides this. This means that on-site servers and systems can be accessed remotely quickly and efficiently. Meaning sales teams can access data while on the road or workers can work remotely from home.
Video conferencing. With improved connectivity comes the ability to conduct video conferences. This means that people form multiple offices can conduct face to face meetings without the need to travel. This saves time and costs and means that businesses can connect across the globe.
Cost savings. Some existing business grade internet services may be costing a business thousands of dollars per month.
With the NBN high bandwidth speeds are available for a fraction of the price of some of the other business grade services. If a company has a high number of employees that needed good internet connectivity, they would like have been spending more than $500 per month, often much more. With the NBN speeds of 100/40Mbps are available for less than $100 per month in some cases.
Some benefits of the NBN are still not realised, and as time goes on with access to fast internet, new technologies and functionality will likely be developed.
